Equal weightage for five core subjects
The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) will divide question papers evenly between multiple-choice and descriptive questions for Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science. Papers will carry 50 percent MCQs and 50 percent descriptive questions.
Approval under the 1,200-mark scheme
The change was approved at the FBISE Board of Governors' 124th meeting on 28 July 2026. It is being introduced under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024, which carries a total of 1,200 marks.
Phase-in schedule
- Second Annual Examination 2026: the new pattern applies to fresh SSC-I and HSSC-I students sitting these examinations for the first time under the 2024 scheme.
- First Annual Examination 2027: the pattern extends to SSC-II and HSSC-II students who appeared under the new pattern in the Second Annual Examination 2026, and to all SSC-I and HSSC-I students under the 2024 scheme.
- First Annual Examination 2028: the pattern reaches SSC-II and HSSC-II students who earlier took their SSC-I or HSSC-I examinations under the same pattern.
