Comprehensive Reforms in Higher Education
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has approved key academic policy reforms during its 47th meeting, presided over by Chairman Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar. Under the new policy, a compulsory three-credit-hour Artificial Intelligence (AI) course will be integrated into every undergraduate and postgraduate degree curriculum across public and private universities.
Biannual Competency Testing for Computing Students
Alongside the AI coursework requirement, the HEC has established mandatory National Skills Competency Tests (NSCT) for computing students enrolled in their 7th and 8th semesters. These tests will be conducted twice every year by the Education Testing Council (ETC) to assess practical skills.
Re-evaluation for Suspended Programmes
To independently verify previous assessment results, the commission recommended administering a fresh test for students belonging to 44 universities currently experiencing suspensions on computing admissions.
Implementation Timeline and Next Steps
The compulsory AI course policy will take effect starting in Fall 2026. Academic institutions are required to update their degree structures prior to the rollout, while senior computing students must prepare to register for the upcoming NSCT cycles with the Education Testing Council. Detailed curriculum templates and specific test schedules remain subject to official circulars from the relevant authorities.
