Google opened its first office in Pakistan on 18 August 2026, marking the technology company's formal local presence after more than a decade of investment in the country. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Islamabad office alongside a nine-member Google delegation led by Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy Wilson White, with US Chargé d'Affaires Natalie Baker also attending.
The Inauguration Ceremony
The inauguration took place at the Prime Minister's House, where Sharif, White, Baker, and other dignitaries jointly unveiled a commemorative plaque. Sharif described the occasion as a "major milestone" in Pakistan's digital transformation and said the government was pursuing a "Digital Nation Pakistan" vision that included digitising the economy and upgrading IT infrastructure.
White said the local office would deepen Google's commitment to accelerating Pakistan's digital transformation and build on years of existing partnership. He noted that the company had been investing in Pakistan for more than a decade and that opening a local office was a "special moment" for Google.
Economic Footprint and Employment
White stated that Google's activities had contributed more than Rs3.9 trillion to economic activity involving Pakistani businesses and households over the past ten years, supporting over 960,000 jobs. He outlined three areas of focus going forward: investment in Pakistani people, manufacturing and infrastructure linked to hardware exports, and local businesses.
White highlighted an ongoing Chromebook assembly line established with local partners, noting strong potential for Chromebooks assembled in Pakistan to be exported to other countries in the region. He said Google had already helped upskill more than one million Pakistanis through career certificate programmes and partnerships with schools and teachers.
Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunications Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the Ministry would continue strengthening collaboration with Google in digital skills, artificial intelligence, cloud technologies, education, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Free Gemini Subscriptions for Students
Google announced that all students across Pakistan will receive free one-year subscriptions to Google Gemini, the company's generative AI tool. A formal announcement with rollout details is expected later this week, according to Gulf News. The initiative is intended to give students wider access to AI tools for education, employment, and entrepreneurship.
What the Evidence Does Not Yet Establish
The exact physical location of the office within Islamabad has not been publicly specified. Google has not disclosed the number of staff the office will house, nor has it published a timeline for when the Gemini subscriptions will become available to students. Whether the office will serve as a regional hub beyond Pakistan has not been confirmed.
